Friends & Family support groups

NAMI Shoreline Friends and Family Support Group Meetings are held on the second Tuesday and fourth Wednesday of every month.

Meetings are open to adult family members, spouses, and friends of those diagnosed with a mental illness.  It is we who are the front-line care-givers dealing with serious mental illness – PTSD, Depression, Bipolar, OCD, Anxiety disorders, Schizophrenia or Schizoaffective Disorder.  We are all in the same boat, and we are all looking for encouragement, mutual support, and the input of shared experiences … the whole point of the Support Group.

Meetings are free of charge and begin promptly at 7:00 pm and end at 8:30 pm.

Second TUESDAYS in GUILFORD: Nathanael B. Greene Center, 32 Church Street. (Check digital listing in the lobby for precise room location. One of us will greet you at the front door to guide you if you’re not familiar with the building.)

Fourth WEDNESDAYS in MADISON: Madison Senior Center, 29 Bradley Road, Madison

For more information about the Support Group Meetings, please call one of the group’s trained facilitators:

Susan   203 421 5563 (Madison group)

Wendy  203 779 9686  (Madison group)

Divinna  860 876 0236  (Guilford group)

For a listing of all NAMI Support Group meetings in the state, please visit the NAMI CT website.

We at NAMI Shoreline are here for you no matter what the season!!

Challenging Kids: Enlightened Parents

We are somewhat closer to understanding the signs of mental illness than we were when my kids were in school. But we have a long way to go. You've probably have heard the words "misbehavior" "bad attitude" and "lazy" in a sentence about your kid. It's demoralizing not to be taken seriously when it comes to mental illness. #KidsDoWellifTheyCan #KnowtheSigns #Listen #empathy #SkillNotWill #ThinkKids

“He Just Needs To Get Motivated. Doesn’t He Want To Graduate?”
Somehow, despite depression in adults receiving more awareness, it is assumed that teenagers that are sleeping in or not doing their homework must be either lazy or rebellious. Some days, getting through an entire day of school was the maximum that he could do. And the expectation for him to also do hours of homework was not always reasonable. "

Joseph Navarra, President of NAMI Manchester, weighs in on this important and overwhelming issue.
"Navarra said that every year faculty identify students who appear to be suffering or troubled, but there is little on campus to help them. If a student is in crisis, however, he said several staff members will respond and will call 911 or a mobile crisis team if needed."

Every conversation I have about mental health ends with the realization that our power is in our ability to communicate in such a way that the one suffering feels heard, feels safe. This Ted Talk illustrates the point beautifully. Have you heard of the new documentary on HBO called "Ernie & Joe: Crisis Cops"? Can't recommend it enough. The approach is applicable in all walks of life: at home, in schools, in hospitals, in jails, in treatment centers. If POLICE OFFICERS can show compassion, SCHOOLS can. It's a mindshift. And a life-saving one. #Listen #staycalm #nojudgment #curiousnotfurious #behaviorisasignal #connectedness #feelingsafe #feelingheard
THIS IS JOE FROM THE DOCUMENTARY (MENTIONED ABOVE):Studies support the fact that one in four or one in five adults living in the US qualify for a mental health diagnosis. If 20-25% of adults qualify for a men...
